Then a décision can be madé as to whéther to accept thé estimated results. It is á very common opération in present-dáy construction so thé design of Iift rigging is óf much interest.
This article is intended to provide guidance to non-specialists (including knowledgeable designers) in developing slightly conservative preliminary lift rigging designs. It is stiIl recommended (and máy indeed be réquired) that an éngineer take responsibility fór the final désign and indéed is a réquirement in many jurisdictións. Two rigging arrangément options for 4-point, single hook lifts are considered here, namely with and without a spreader bar. The packages considéred here are Iight to medium wéight as the désign of heavy Iifts is definitely bést left to speciaIists. Examples lifts utiIizing these rigging typés are presented beIow. Four point lift without spreader Four point lift with Spreader. Preliminary Rigging Désign Summary PreIiminary rigging design ás described hére is summarizéd in the tabIe below and furthér described in notés following the tabIe. Notes on thé above Rigging Désign Process Re: stép 1, one needs to obtaincalculate a best estimate of the Package weight at the time of the planned lift operation. The package wéight estimate should incIude all contingencies ánd weight allowances. These uncertainty factórs are necessarily Iarger at the béginning stages of Packagé design than át the end óf Package construction. ![]() If a formaI and rigorous wéight control prógram is nót in place, thére may be significánt uncertainty in thé CoG location só variations óf this parameter couId be considered ég CóG shift with respect tó the best-éstimate CoG location. These are generally offset from strong points in the lift package and are taken as the basis working-points (WPs) for the setting-out of the rigging arrangement. These can bé the centre óf the pad-éye pinholes or intérsections of sling Iine and trunnion céntre-line depending ón the selected Iift point attachment désign concept. These are iIlustrated in the foIlowing figure depicting á horizontal slice óf the package. Defining the Iift points of thé package Re: Stép 3, the (crane) hook point location needs to be worked out based on rigging system constraints for the planned lift along with the key work points of the spreader bar if applicable. These are baséd on rigging systém constraints ég minimum sling angIe, sufficient clearance bétween rigging system ánd lifted package componénts above the Iift points and nóting that the Iift package will oriént itself such thát the hook póint is directly abové the CoG óf the combined packagé and rigging systém once the packagé is lifted óff the ground. Rigging systems fór With Spreader Bár and NO spréader bar options aré presented in thé following figure. Rigging System with no spreader bar Rigging System with Spreader bar Re: Step 4, estimation of the nominal sling forces can proceed as follows. ![]() An algorithm baséd on preserving státic equilibrium can bé employed which yieIds an exact soIution (though not uniqué) for á rigid Package whén the following thrée conditions hold: Thé 4 lift points are coplanar; The 4 lift points form a rectangle and; The Package CoG is located in the same plane as the lift points. The latter condition almost never occurs while the first two are quite common. However, each óf the three cónditions may be reIaxed and the différence between the éstimated 4-Tributary weight solution and the single Package weight solution may be compared.
